It's just a TV talent show. He has just been a janitor for 23 years. He is just singing a song. And then he is given 3 minutes in the spot light and he shines. But for 23 years he has survived in the shadows. The children call him Mr Richard but to many of the parents and staff he was invisible. Now we have heard his talents we wonder - "How had he been overlooked for so long?" But this happens every day in our businesses. The receptionist, the admin person, the warehouse staff, the gardner, the cook, the hairdresser they all live in the shadows.
One of my waitresses who worked in my restaurant went on to become Vice President of American Airlines, Vice President of DocuSign, and is now leading investments for cyber businesses globally.
We all employ Richard and Emily, who have many talents that often go undiscovered. But as leaders in our businesses we have the power to change this. We can shine the light on our staff who live in the shadows. This is our gift. I employed a barman who went on to become an airline pilot. A waitress who stared on TV many nights a week. I employed a grill chef who had many number one hits with his music and still tours today. Most leaders never ignite the talent in their businesses - do you?
