In 1950, the record for changing two tyres on an F1 car was 67 seconds. Today, the record is 1.8 seconds for four tyres. I was privileged to spend three years coaching a leader within the McLaren F1 team. The intense training every day of the week to ensure perfection for 1.8 seconds is stunning. Every aspect of the process is reviewed to identify areas for improvement. You have to contrast in the first video the wheels being taken off by one person using a lump hammer to the slick multi-person operation in the second video.

The McLaren team takes this improvement methodology into the businesses of their sponsors to share the improvement ethos, tools, and techniques. You will not be surprised to hear that these tools are just as effective in achieving business improvements. Sales processes, Quote Times, Order Fulfilment, Staff Productivity, Data Entry and Management Information are only a few of the areas where I have witnessed significant performance improvements.Â

As a business coach I am often called in to help business owners when sales are flat or profits are poor. My initial approach is to deep dive into every aspect of the business and identify the priority areas for improvement. I then draw up a plan to accelerate the growth and improve the profitability. Over the next 12 months I support and drive the improvement process utilising many of the tools and techniques used by the F1 team.
How have your critical areas of performance improved this year? What are your plans for the next improvement over the next three months? What is your vision for performance improvement?
